Nobel Laureate Harold Varmus Speaks at Inaugural Aaron J. Shatkin Lecture
To recognize CABM Director Dr. Aaron Shatkin's scientific achievements and the excellence in science and education that he has fostered, an endowed annual lectureship was established in his name and announced at the 25th Anniversary CABM Symposium in October 2011.
CABM is thrilled that Dr. Harold Varmus, Director of the National Cancer Institute, delivered the inaugural Aaron J. Shatkin Lecture entitled "Good Questions Drive Good Science" on Monday, April 16, 2012. Dr. Varmus is co-recipient of a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of the cellular origin of a retroviral oncogene in Rous sarcoma virus. He previously served as Director of the National Institutes of Health and as President and CEO of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. In every way, Dr. Varmus exemplifies the excellence in science that the lectureship was established to celebrate.
The inagural Aaron J. Shatkin Lecture was held at 4:00PM in the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Main Lecture Hall, adjacent to CABM. Attendees were invited to a reception in the Great Hall immediately following the lecture.
CABM appreciates the tremendous support expressed for the Aaron J. Shatkin Lectureship and extends our warmest thanks to friends, colleagues and donors to the fund. We are excited about the inaugural lecture this year and look forward to making the Shatkin Lecture a highly anticipated event on campus each spring.
